Over the years I've had a love - hate
relationship with numbered lists in software programs. Pressing enter after
typing in some text moves the cursor to the next line automatically numbering
it with the next number. Most of the time this is quite satisfactory, but
there are other times when its not. Today I accidentally stumbled on the
solution to my problem in Notes, and found that this also works in Microsoft
Word.
There are times when I might want a
blank line between my list items like this:
- Some Text
- Some more Text
In other cases a numbered item may contain several associated concepts that should be listed together, but not typed together as paragraph. This idea might look like this:
- Idea
Sub concept A
Sub concept B
Sub concept C
- Idea
There are other possibilities, but the way to make then all happen is to remember one thing - instead of pressing <Enter> at the end of a line of numbered or bulleted text, press <Shift><Enter>. When you do this the cursor moves to the next line directly under the first letter of the line above. Continuing to press <Shift><Enter> creates new indented unnumbered lines. When you want to start numbering your lines again, just press <Enter>.
