I've been playing around with GMail for about a month now and find it too
be a vast improvement over the email account I obtained with my Verizon
DSL account.
I found the GMail interface a little confusing at first, but now I'm getting
used to it. When I logged in last week I clicked the New Features link
and found a handful of new features had just been added. Of course all
of the new features are features we Lotus Notes users take for granted,
but some are usually missing from web mail accounts. The first in the list
is the most notable - Gmail Notifier. The Gmail notifier is a little program
that you download and install on your PC. The application loads when you
boot your PC and checks your Gmail account periodically to see if you have
new mail.
I downloaded and installed this feature immediately. Now I don't have to
periodically launch my browser to check for email. When loaded the Gmail
notifier puts a blue and white envelope icon in your system tray. When
you mouse over it you can see how many unread threads you have in you mail
box. if you select Tell me again from the notifier's menu you can
see the date, from, subject, file attachments and first sentence of each
unread mail thread. Other menu options are Check Mail Now,View
Inbox, and you can set it to launch Gmail when you click on an internet
mailto link.
This is a great feature and will assure that GMail is my primary internet
email provider.
